Innsbruck - Bolzano
Innsbruck - Bolzano, 8 days option
On the Etsch Cycle Path into the gorgeous South Tyrol…
We cycle predominantly in the river valleys of Inn and Etsch and encounter flat to slightly hilly daily stages. There are only few notable ascents, like, for instance, a longer increase before Imst Kaltern up to St. Pauls, and the last part to the Reschenpass from Nauders.
Total length: approx. 265/300 bicycle kilometres
Dates
Travel beginning: on Saturdays
Duration: 8 days (7 nights)
Itinerary
1. Day: Innsbruck
Individual arrival in the capital of Tyrol and accommodation (Hofburg (imperial palace), "Goldenes Dachl").
2. Day: Innsbruck - Imst (approx. 65 km)
We follow the Inn River along the former towing path, cycle at the foot of the Martinswand (mountain), and through smaller villages and towns to Stams (beautiful Cistercian monastery in Baroque style), and finally via Haiming to Imst, the “Meran of North Tyrol”.
3. Day: Imst - Reschenpass - Burgeis/Mals (approx. 50 km by bike)
Past Zams monastery the Inn continues to lead the way to Landeck. Here we get on the bus, which takes us the next 40 km up to the Reschenpass until Nauders. After having braved the last 100 metres on our bikes, we can look forward to a pleaseant ride to Burgeis/Mals. We have enough time for a rest at Lake Reschensee. Over the next few kilometres we enjoy a view of Marienberg monastery.
4. Day: Burgeis/Mals - Meran (approx. 65 km)
On today’s route we arrive first in Glurns (completely preserved medieval city wall). Past the Montani ruins and through Schlanders we cycle to Meran. Should you feel that today’s stage is too long for you, you can also travel a part of it on the Vinschger railway, a journey that you are expected to organise on your own.
5. Day: Trip to Passeier Valley (approx. 40 km)
Today we have the possibility of taking a bicycle trip to Passeier Valley and to the Sandwirt (birthplace of Andreas Hofer, the national freedom fighter of Tyrol). Alternatively, you may go on a hike along the Tappeiner promenade or go on a shopping trip under the famous arbours of Meran.
6. Day: Meran - Kaltern/Tramin/Auer (approx. 45 - 50 km)
Through numerous orchards and vineyards in the area around the wine road of South Tyrol and past many fortified castles and ruins, we cycle to Lake Kalterer See today („Schnatterpeck-Altar” in Lana, “Dom auf dem Lande” (cathedral in the country) in St. Pauls).
7. Day: Kaltern/Tramin/Auer - Bolzano (approx. 35 km)
Today we either cycle through the even Etsch Valley or we brave one last increase and head via the Montiggler Lakes to Bolzano.
8. Day: Bolzano
Individual departure or extension of trip.
