Krimml - Bad Ischl

Krimml - Bad Ischl

From the Falls to the „Kaiservilla“…

From the Krimmler Falls (a scientific study confirms that even a short stay in the vicinity of the falls will have ameliorative effects on the pulmonary function), we cycle along the river Salzach to Salzburg, the city of Mozart. Here we leave the Tauern bicycle path and enter the scenic area of the Salzkammergut, where we will meet the destination our trip: Bad Ischl. The route leads through flat to slightly hilly terrain with intermittent smaller and major increases, albeit with little differences in altitude.

Total length: approx. 272 km

Dates

01.05.12 till 15.10.12

Travel beginning: daily arrival

Duration: 7 days (6 nights)

Itinerary

1. Day: Krimml/Wald

Individual arrival and accommodation in Krimml/Wald; free, secure parking space

2. Day: Krimml/Wald – Piesendorf/Kaprun/Zell am See (approx. 57 km)

Via Rosental we bike to Neukirchen (Kammerlanderstall) and onward towards Habachtal - famous for its find spots of emeralds - to Bramberg (museum of local history). The local museum of Mittersill, the principal town of Oberpinzgau, is well worth paying a visit to as well. Via Uttendorf (national park-information-centre) and Niedernsill we arrive at Piesendorf, where the European Sport Region “Kaprun/Zell” begins.

3. Day: Piesendorf/Kaprun/Zell am See – Bischofshofen (approx. 58 km)

We cycle past Bruck, which leads to the Großglockner High Alpine Road, to Taxenbach and Lend, where the Gasteiner valley begins. We go on, however, past an impressive fall (Gasteiner Ache) to Bischofshofen.

4. Day: Bischofshofen – Salzburg (approx. 57 km)

Past Hohenwerfen Castle we should make a detour to the awe-inspiring giant ice world (“Eisriesenwelt”: schedule approx.4 hours for your stay). Afterwards, we cycle along the mountain pass up a small incline to Pass Lueg, where we are invited to take a break at the nearby inn. After an exhilarating descent, we reach Golling and - over Hallein - Salzburg.

5. Day: Salzburg – Mondsee (approx. 50 km)

We start out on the Salzkammergut bicycle path via Eugendorf to Thalgau. Along the Fuschler Ache (primary inflow) we are already heading in the direction of Lake Mondsee. We cover the last kilometres cycling along the foot of Drachenwand (Dragonwall) mountain and via Schober into the town of Mondsee (“moonlake”).

6. Day: Mondsee – Bad Ischl (approx. 50 km)

After today’s incline to Scharflinger Höhe (Scharflinger height), we enjoy a breezy downhill ride past the deep green Krotensee to St. Gilgen at Lake Wolfgangsee. On the northern bank of the lake, the famous Romantic hotel „Weiße Rössl“ (“White Steed”) beckons as well as the pilgrimage church with the renown winged altar in St. Wolfgang (also accessible via ship). Our trip ends in the reverent imperial city of Bad Ischl.

7. Day: Bad Ischl

Individual departure or extension of trip.
