Cycling Paradise East Frisia

Fresh sea air, East Frisian tea and a hearty "Moin, Moin"...

Hidden moor villages, green pastures, and shining rape fields have shaped this extraordinarily unique landscape. In addition to East Frisian (“Ostfriesen”) tea, “crooked” church steeples and “Häuptlingsburgen” (fortresses of the old chieftains), we are sure to be enchanted by the North Sea Island, Norderney.

Total length: approx. 315 bicycle kilometres

Dates

19.04.12 till 08.10.12

1. Day: Oldenburg

Individual arrival in the cycling town of Oldenburg and accommodation.

2. Day: Oldenburg - Wiesmoor (approx. 55 km)

Our first bicycle stage takes us through the Ammerland parkland into the spa town of Bad Zwischenahn. On we go via Remels (hightest point of East Frisia with 18 metres above sea level!) to our destination, Wiesmoor.

3. Day: Wiesmoor - Aurich - Emden (approx. 55 km)

Cycling through isolated Fehn settlements, we reach the East Frisian capital of Aurich, which for centuries had been reigned over by East Frisian chieftains and dukes. Along the Ems-Jade-Canal we finally cycle into the seaport town of Emden.

4. Day: Emden - Norden/surroundings (approx. 55 km)

We begin our day with a bicycle tour to the picturesque fishing village of Greetsiel, which is home to the biggest crab-fishing port in the Weser-Ems region. Past Leybucht bay, where we may be lucky enough to observe some seals, we soon reach Norden/surroundings.

5. Day: Norderney Island

We heartily recommend taking a trip to the enchanting North Sea island Norderney, which is wonderful to explore by bike (Ferry crossing from/to Norddeich incl. bicycle and visitor’s tax is not included in the price of the trip). Alternatively, we may cycle along the coast and the Wattenmeer National Park or pay a visit to the seal station in Norddeich. Accommodation the same as yesterday in Norden/surroundings.

6. Day: Norden/surroundings - Wittmund/surroundings (approx. 50 km)

Today we cycle via Dornum to the most beautiful moated castle in East Frisia and onwards through the fertile marshes into the former city of chieftains, Esens. Finally, we arrive at the town of Wittmund, which is famous for its unique brick buildings. Accommodation in Wittmund/surroundings.

7. Day: Wittmund/surroundings - Dangast/surroundings (approx. 50 km)

At first we cycle into the medieval city of Jever and, past Gödens Castle, to Dangast, the oldest North Sea coastal resort of Lower Saxony. Accommodation in Dangast /surroundings.

8. Day: Dangast/surroundings - Oldenburg (approx. 50 km)

Past the animal and theme park Jadenberg and via the health-resort Rastede, we head back to Oldenburg, where we may collect our luggage until 16.00. Afterwards, individual departure or extension of trip.
