The Weser Cycle Path

The Weser Cycle Path

From Hann. Münden to the Hanseatic city of Bremen...

The Weser Cycle Path starts in Hann. Münden, where the rivers Werra and Fulda converge. We may look forward to the Weser Highland and the Porta Westfalica, before we arrive via the North German Plain in the Hanseatic city of Bremen.

Total length: approx. 382 bicycle kilometres

Dates

14.04.12 till 13.10.12

Travel beginning: daily arrival

Duration: 8 days (7 nights)

Itinerary

1. Day: Hann. Münden

Individual arrival and accommodation. We recommend an evening stroll through the medieval city centre with its historic half-timbered buildings.

2. Day: Hann. Münden - Bad Karlshafen/Beverungen (approx. 46 - 55 km)

The first stage of our bicycle tour leads us past the former Benedictine Abbey of Bursfelde into the Huguenot town of Bad Karlshafen, where the town centre invites us to explore its neatly renovated houses in baroque style. Accommodation in Bad Karlshafen or in Beverungen.

3. Day: Bad Karlshafen/Beverungen - Holzminden/Bodenwerder (approx. 37 - 55 km)

On today’s route we look forward, among other things, to the city of Fürstenberg with its porcelain factory and the old Hanseatic city of Höxter, which sports over 160 historic, mostly half-timbered buildings (classified as monuments). Accommodation in Holzminden or Bodenwerder.

4. Day: Holzminden/Bodenwerder - Hameln/Rinteln (approx. 26 - 55 km)

The small town of Bodenwerder owes its popularity to the so-called “Lügenbaron” (lying baron) of Münchhausen. On today’s stage, which eventually leads us into the Pied Piper town of Hameln, we encounter a small number of romantic villages which invite us to linger. Accommodation in Hameln or in Rinteln.

5. Day: Hameln/Rinteln - Minden (approx. 41 - 69 km)

Today, the Weser River wounds through the last foothills of the Weser Highland and reaches the North German Plain. Our interim destination is Minden- a once flourishing commercial town during the Middle Ages which suffered severe damage during World War II, before being reconstructed through the course of a model urban redevelopment.

6. Day: Minden - Nienburg (approx. 63 km)

Not until Minden does the landscape change dramatically, with the Weser River snaking in wide loops through a land distinguished by floodplains and scattered farms with large meadows and numerous windmills.

7. Day: Nienburg - Verden (approx. 57 km)

Today’s stage will particularly appeal to nature enthusiasts as it takes us through the historic county of Hoya. We cycle through original villages and isolated farmsteads into the horse riding town of Verden, where we ought to pay a visit to the old town and the cathedral.

8. Day: Verden - Bremen (approx. 53 km)

Our last route leads us into the Hanseatic city of Bremen. Individual departure or extension of trip.
