Lüneburg Heath 8 days/7 nights

Lüneburg Heath, 8 days option

"On the Lüneburg Heath, in the wonderful country"...

Romantics, nature lovers, and culture enthusiasts – they all love the Lüneburg Heath, just as the heath poet, Hermann Löns, once did, which is no miracle to us! Heidschnucken (moorland sheep), which graze serenely in the vast landscape, recreation parks, which tell stories and promise adventure, old timber frames, big cities like Bremen, and a train station as an artistic object in Uelzen: The face of the Heath is changeable; only high mountains are missing here, which is not a disadvantage at all for cyclists, however.

Total length: approx. 425 bicycle kilometres

Dates

15.04.12 till 14.10.12

Travel beginning: on Sundays

Duration: 8 days (7 nights)

Itinerary

1. Day: Bremen

Individual arrival until late afternoon and accommodation.

2. Day: Bremen - Schneverdingen (approx. 87 km)

Today we cycle along the romantic Wümme River to Rotenburg with its pretty old town. Past the villages of Bothel and Hemslingen we arrive in Schneverdingen. Situated directly near the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park, the romantic small town develops its own special charm. If the stage is too long for you, you can shorten it by train (to be organised by yourself; good connections between Bremen and Rotenburg). You can also have an overnight stay in Rotenburg (Bremen - Rotenburg, approx 44 km -> 9 day/8 nights option).

3. Day: Schneverdingen - Lüneburg (approx. 60 km)

Through the impressive heath landscape of the North Heath Nature Park, we cycle over the „Wilseder Mountain“ and through small romantic hamlets. Heath, pinewoods, and Heidschnucken characterize the vastness of the landscape here. The University city of Lüneburg awaits us with its numerous beautiful red-brick houses.

4. Day: Lüneburg - Uelzen (approx. 55 km)

The typical heath landscape will stay with us today as we head for Uelzen, which is the name of today’s destination. Countless medieval churches and chapels invite us here for a visit, while our interest is piqued by art as well: The Train Station in Uelzen was built in the style of Friedensreich Hundertwasser as part of the Expo 2000.

5. Day: Uelzen - Celle (approx. 60 km)

Via the towns of Holdenstedt, Holxen, Suderburg, Scharnhorst, and Garßen today’s stage leads into the capital of Celle. Some 480 restored half-timbered buildings make up the old town here; they and the Celle Castle in the style of the Weser Renaissance vie for our attention.

6. Day: Celle - Soltau (approx. 60 km)

Through the Südheide Nature Park the ride continues into the city of Soltau. The interesting town hall, the Soltau Toy Museum with its partly over 350 years of old exhibits or the known Heath Park with numerous shows and attractions are well worth a visit.

7. Day: Soltau - Verden (approx. 50 km)

Via Walsrode, the Hermann-Löns-City with the famous Bird Park, we cycle into the over 1000-year-old city of Verden by the Weser. The horse-riding town and its landmark, the cathedral, will not only appeal to lovers of horses.

8. Day: Verden - Bremen (approx. 53 km)

Along the Weser and off the main streets we return to Bremen, where our luggage will be ready for pick-up until 4 pm at the latest. Individual departure or extension of trip.
