From Hamburg to the beautiful North Sea island of Sylt...

The North Sea Coast Cycle Path – the longest signposted cycle path in the world – covers more than 6000 km and runs through 8 countries (Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Scotland, England, Belgium, and the Netherlands). On our section we cycle along the Northern Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein from Hamburg to Niebüll and Sylt. Let’s discover miles and miles of dykes, countless wind turbines, leisurely grazing sheep, and enjoy the healthy, salty sea air on flat to slightly hilly stages.

Itinerary

1. Day: Hamburg

Individual arrival and accommodation in the metropolis by the Elb River and Hanseatic city of Hamburg.

2. Day: Hamburg - Elmshorn (approx. 55 km)

We cycle along the bank of the Elb River from Hamburg Altona via Blankenese to Wedel. Through the dyke-protected Elb marshes, we head via Uetersen to Elmshorn.

3. Day: Elmshorn - Brunsbüttel (approx. 55 km)

Our tour leads us through the charming small town of Glückstadt to Brunsbüttel today. Here begins the Kiel Canal, where we may see some ocean liners in the big lockage.

4. Day: Brunsbüttel - Büsum/surrounding area (approx. 50 km)

After Brunsbüttel the Elbe River joins the Northern Sea for good, and we cycle through the vast expanses of the land of Dithmarsch in the direction of North Frisia. At the port of Meldorf we again join the coast and look out on the Wattenmeer on our way to Büsum/surrounding area.

5. Day: Büsum/surrounding area - Husum (approx. 48 km)

Via the Eider Sea Lock we reach the Eiderstedt peninsula and, by cycling via Katingsiel and Tönning, may head directly to Husum. A nature observation tower and an information centre offer us may interesting facts about the SHL-Wattenmeer National Park on the way. Equally worth seeing is the red Haubarg, a typical farm of Eiderstedt, not far from Husum.

6. Day: Husum - Raum/Niebüll/Dagebüll (approx. 55 - 75 km)

We can either cycle via Nordstrand or via the direct route to Hamburg Hallig, and then over the dykes to Dagebüll. Accommodation in the Niebüll/Dagebüll area (if you book a night in Niebüll, the stage may be shortened to approx. 55 km by a train ride from Dagebüll, to be organized on your own).

7. Day: Raum Niebüll/Dagebüll - Insel Sylt - Raum Niebüll/Dagebüll

Train ride (incl. bicycle) from Niebüll over the Hindenburg dam to the North Sea island of Sylt. Let’s take a stroll through the bustling Westerland or explore the island by bike! In the course of the day we take the train back to Niebüll and cycle home to our accommodation in the Niebüll/Dagebüll area.

8. Day: Raum Niebüll/Dagbüll
