1. Day: Wasserburg

Individual arrival in the medieval commercial town and accommodation.

2. Day: Wasserburg - Mühldorf (approx. 50 km)

Today we follow the Inn River and arrive via Gars at Au, home of the impressive former collegiate church of the Augustinian Canons of St. Maria and its adjoining monastery, where the Pope used to receive music lessons as a child on the reed organ. Via Aschau, the place of residence of the Ratzinger family from December 1932 to Spring 1937, we arrive at the medieval city of Mühldorf.

3. Day: Mühldorf - Altötting (approx. 16 km)

Via Tüßling we cycle to Altötting today, where a visit to the wood-carved, soot-blackened “Black Madonna” and the Kapellplatz with the Chapel of Grace, among other things, are well worth seeing. For the Holy Father Altötting embodies the heart of Bavaria und one of the hearts of Europe.

4. Day: Altötting - Burghausen (approx. 34 km)

Today we cycle to the birth place of Pope Benedict XVI, the small town of Marktl. At the northern end of the market place we find his birth place with a commemorative plaque, where the Pope was born on 16 April 1927. Our stage destination is Burghausen, the location of the longest castle in Europe.

5. Day: Burghausen - Waging am See/surroundings (approx. 45 km)

Via Raitenhaslach (splendid Baroque church) and Marienberg (Rococo-pilgrimage church of “Mariä Himmelfahrt”) we reach Tittmoning. With its well preserved townscape and distinctive castle buildings, Tittmoning has been the residence of the Ratzinger family since 1929, and has not for nothing been called the “Dreamland” since the childhood of the Holy Father. The family lived in the so-called “Stubenrauchhaus” (today a savings bank). Our place of accommodation is Waging am See/surroundings.

6. Day: Waging am See/surroundings - Chiemsee/surroundings (approx. 30 km)

From the warmest lake in Upper Bavaria we cycle over Hufschlag, where the Pope has lived since 1937, to Traunstein. On 8 July 1951, Pope Benedict XVI celebrated his primiz mass in the parish church of St. Oswald in Traunstein. We cycle farther to Chieming, where we have the opportunity of visiting the parish church of “Maria Himmelfahrt”.

7. Day: Chiemsee/surroundings - Wasserburg (approx. 65 km)

We cycle via Seeon with its Benedictine Monastery to Breitbrunn. Who wants to cut today’s stage a bit shorter can forego Seeon and cycle the first stage directly along Lake Chiemsee to Gstadt instead. Once there, we recommend taking a trip to Frauenchiemsee island with its Benedictine Monastery or to Herrenchiemsee island with the “New Castle” (smaller copy of the Palace of Versailles), and the former Augustinian Canonical Monastery. Return journey to Wasserburg.

8. Day: Wasserburg

Individual departure or extension of trip.
