Elbe Cycle Path, 7 days option

From Elbsandstein into the Lutheran town of Wittenberg or farther to Dessau…

This easy tour takes us into the land of the Saxons, which – embedded in a marvellous river landscape - offers us a historically interesting and scenically charming bicycle tour with its history and tradition.

Total length: approx. 211/248 bicycle kilometres

Dates

01.05.12 till 22.10.12

Travel beginning: daily arrival

Duration: 7 days (6 nights)

Itinerary

1. Day: Dresden

Individual arrival and overnight stay.

2. Day: Saxon Switzerland (approx. 45 km + train ride)

We cycle on the romantic Elbe Cycle Path to Bad Schandau today. Past the Albrecht Castles and the “Blue Wonder” (Elb Bridge), we continue through the Elb wetlands until Pillnitz Castle. The route leads us upstream to the cragged sandstone rocks of the Elbsandstein Mountains. Soon we reach Bad Schandau, from where we embark on the return journey to Dresden either by bike or by suburban train (not included in the price).

3. Day: Dresden - Meißen (approx. 25 km)

Today we cycle to the porcelain city of Meißen. On the way we should visit the center of Radebeul or we can also make a side trip through the vineyards to Weinböhla (+ approx. 20 km).

4. Day: Meißen - Riesa/Strehla (approx. 27 - 35 km)

On the banks of the Elbe the route leads us a bit farther along the Saxon wine route. At the baroque Diesbar-Seußlitz Castle, we should indulge in a short rest in the lovely palace gardens before continuing to Riesa/Strehla.

5. Day: Riesa/Strehla - Torgau (approx. 40 - 48 km)

We cycle leisurely downstream the flat valley to Mühlberg, where the former Cistercian monastery and the historic Saxon “Postmeilensäule” (post mile column) are worth our while. Afterwards, we continue into the former fortress city of Torgau.

6. Day: Torgau - Lutheran city of Wittenberg (approx. 66 km)

Lichtenberg Castle and Pretzsch point us the way in the direction of Wittenberg. Surely the most well-known building in Wittenberg is Luther hall (biggest collection of Reformation history in the world).

7. Day: Wittenberg

Individual departure or extension of trip.
