With this special tour we enjoy the Salzkammergut in all its splendour. In the course of this journey, we will pass the nights in stylish, pristine castles and manor houses, which are distinguished by their love for detail, and in exclusive 4-star hotels respectively. Let’s be seduced by the flair of these venerable establishments, for on this bicycle tour it is not only the journey that is the reward.

Itinerary

1. Day: Salzburg

Individual arrival and accommodation. You will certainly get a flair for this city on a personal walk.

2. Day: Salzburg - Mattsee (approx. 55 km)

Along the river Salzach we cycle downstream till Oberndorf, the birthplace of the famous Christmas carol “Silent Night”. On we go to the Augustinian Monastery of Michaelbeuern, and then into the marvellous Trumer Lake Country, which includes Lake Obertrumer See, Lake Mattsee and Lake Grabensee. Accommodation in Mattsee.

3. Day: Mattsee - Mondsee (approx. 50 km)

At first, our route leads us via the European nature reserve Wenger Moor to Neumarkt, and then further on to Lake Irrsee (also known as Lake Zellersee), which is a favourite among fishermen and was designated as conservation area. Swimming enthusiasts and sun worshippers are likely to prefer Lake Mondsee, one of the warmest lakes in the Salzkammergut. Equally worth seeing are the castle und the Benedictine Monastery.

4. Day: Mondsee - Attersee - Traunsee (approx. 50 km)

After following Lake Mondsee to its end, we go on board the ship in Unterach and sail across Lake Attersee as far as Weyregg (mind the seasonal times!). From there we put the pedal to the metal once again, as we discover the Aurachtal (Aurach valley) and soon reach the lovely ceramic town of Gmunden by the marvellous Lake Traunsee. The bustling town with its southern charm is surrounded by mountains and has much to offer, including Seeschloss Ort (Lake Castle), Renaissance town hall with ceramic “glockenspiel” (carillon).

5. Day: Traunsee - Bad Aussee - Hallstatt (approx. 30 km)

In the morning we take the train from Ebensee to Bad Aussee. Let’s enjoy the charming village before we cycle back to Obertraun by Lake Hallstätter See with its mighty Dachstein glacial massif and the attractive giant glacial caves. From Obertraun we bike along the lakeshore up to Hallstatt (“World Cultural and Natural Heritage” of the UNESCO since 1997). Many visitors have described Hallstatt as the most beautiful seaside town in the world; and we too shall be thrilled by it! We strongly recommend visiting the charnel house and the salt mine as well.

6. Day: Hallstatt - Wolfgangsee (approx. 50 km)

Today we start with a boat trip across Lake Hallstätter See, and head via Bad Goisern into the imperial and cultural city of Bad Ischl. A variety of majestic sights awaits us here, such as the teahouse of Empress Elisabeth I. (“Sissi”) of Austria, the Kaiservilla (summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph I.), the imperial park and the Leharvilla. From here we go on along the Ischler Ache (Ischler River) to Lake Wolfgangsee, where today’s journey is concluded.

7. Day: Wolfgangsee - Salzburg (approx. 60 km)

We cycle half of today’s stage on the Ischler train line, which the historic railway connection from Salzburg to Bad Ischl from 1891 to 1957. Along the lakeshore, our way leads us first into the village of St. Gilgen. After an exhilarating downhill ride to Scharfling, we continue on the second part of the Ischler train line, along Lake Mondsee and via Thalgau and Eugendorf, back to Salzburg.
