Göta Canal

Göta Canal

Along the fairest waterway of Sweden…

A wonderfully varied nature and the sheer power of the water in the locks await us on this tour on the eastern part of the Göta Canal. Wooded hills, picturesque farmsteads, as well as glittering lakes, characterize this region. We discover small Swedish towns with their red wooden houses, churches, and castles.

1. Day: Katrineholm

Individual arrival. Good transport connections to South Stockholm Airport.

2. Day: Katrineholm - Wreta (approx. 48 km)

Tour meeting and bicycle hand-over (if booked) at 9 am at your first hotel upon arrival. The first stage leads through green meadow landscapes to Wreta, where we spend the night in a truly beautiful inn from the 19th century. The splendid baroque Ericsberg Castle is especially worth seeing along the way.

3. Day: Wreta - Söderköping (approx. 50 km)

Today we cycle first to Kvarsebo, a small fishing village by the Baltic Sea. From here we cross the bay by ferry, ride past Mem Castle and afterwards enjoy an interesting journey along the Canal to Söderlöping, where we will be enchanted by the many wooden houses lining the canals.

4. Day: Söderköping - Linköping (approx. 64 km)

Today we cycle almost exclusively along the Canal into the university and industrial city of Linköping. Here one of the most beautiful medieval cathedrals is located, as well as an open-air museum and Linköping Castle.

5. Day: Linköping - Motala (approx. 58 km)

For now our journey takes us to the oldest Swedish cloister complex of Vreta (12th century). On we go to Berg to the interesting “Karl Johann Locks”, where altogether seven locks make up the most famous staircase locks of the Göta Canal. Afterwards, we head along the bank of the Canal via Borensberg and Ulfasa Castle to today’s destination, Motala, which lies by the third biggest lake of Sweden, Lake Vätternsee.

6. Day: Motala - Askersund (approx. 68 km)

From Motala we pass through a typical Swedish landscape in the direction of Zinkgruvan to the tip of Lake Vätternsee and Askersund. On the way we encounter many lovely spots where we can go for a swim.

7. Day: Askersund - Regna (approx. 63 km)

Today we cycle at a leisurely pace through dreamily deep forests and glittering lakes to Regna. En route we visit the rosy-coloured “fairytale castle” Boo with its beautiful palace garden. Today’s accommodation takes place in an attractive guesthouse in the typical Swedish village of Regna. Shower and toilet of the rooms, however, are located in the hallway.

8. Day: Regna - Katrineholm (approx. 42 km)

We head to the Hävla hammer mill, a steel works, where the only forging technique, the so-called “Deutschherd” (derived from German manufacturing and which has been preserved until today), can be visited. We continue to head back along the Lake Tisnaren-See to our point of departure, Katrineholm.

9. Day: Katrineholm

Individual departure or extension of trip. (Supplementary nights are bookable in Stockholm on enquiry).
