Siebenbürgen

Siebenbürgen

Transylvania – medieval castles – unexplored cultural landscape...

Siebenbürgen, framed like an arch by the Carpathian Mountains, is a landscape out of a fairytale book. Horse carriages loaded with hay, small castles in each town, and ancient villages in which time seems to stand still characterize the landscape. Our diversified tour, which affords us countless marvellous views, takes us through the scenery of the Carpathian Mountains. Apart from numerous church fortresses, we see the medieval Schäßburg Citadel and Hermannstadt with fantastic patrician buildings from the Baroque and Renaissance period. Talks with Saxons who have stayed here in Siebenbürgen open a window for us into a long forgotten time.

Itinerary

1. Day: Hermannstadt (Sibiu)

If you arrive early, we recommend paying a visit to the three big impressive squares, fringed by gorgeous municipal buildings and churches from the Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque period. Unterstadt (the other Hermannstadt), too, is a place well worth seeing with its winding alleys, flights of stairs, and the colourful farmer’s market by the Zibin. Accommodation in a very good hotel in the city centre, situated in the serenity of Erlen Park.

2. Day: Hermannstadt (Sibiu) – Freck (Avrig) (approx. 45 km)

Our bicycle tour takes us to Michelsberg (Cisnadioara) and Heltau (Cisnadie), where romantic and spectacular castle ruins await us. With a marvellous view of the Fogarasch Mountains, which are almost near enough to touch, we head for our interim destination of Freck.

3. Day: Freck (Avrig) – Fogarasch (Fagaras) (approx. 45 km)

After a short transfer, we cycle through the old Romanian region “terra wlachorum” and along the “Transylvanian Alps” to Fogarasch. The Renaissance castle, the former seat of the Hungarian House of Voivodes, is well worth seeing here.

4. Day: Fogarasch (Fagaras) – Schäßburg (Sighisoara) (approx. 45-70 km)

Today we have a short transfer as well before we cycle through typical Transylvanian villages with numerous church fortresses. The fortified church of Henndorf with its old, painted chests and the impressive church fortress of Trappold hold us spellbound. Today’s goal is Schäßburg, the “pearl of Siebenbürgen”, with the medieval city fortress, the Stundturm (tower), the birthplace of Dracula, and the mountain church. What’s more, the beautiful old town belongs to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.

5. Day: Schäßburg (Sighisoara) – Birthälm (Biertan) (approx. 40 km)

Today we start our bicycle tour through the Kokel Valley and soon reach the old diocesan town of Birthälm. The mighty church fortress, which belong to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage, hold many impressive details, such as the Ehegefängnis (prison of marriage), the Speckturm (tower), as well as a precious late Gothic picture shrine.

6. Day: Birthälm (Biertan) – Marpod/Nucet (approx. 53 km)

The bicycle tour through the isolated Harbach Valley can only be described as wild romantic. In Alzen (Altana) we should not miss a visit to the fortified church with the early Gothic church fortress of Holzmengen (Hosman) with Bestiarien portal. Maybe the custodian of the fortress will show us the old turret clock, the mechanisms of which have been reconditioned/restored. Accommodation in a beautiful inn in idyllic location.

7. Day: Marpod/Nucet – Hermannstadt (Sibiu) (approx. 25 km)

Once again we enjoy a marvellous mountain panorama which accompanies us to Hermannstadt. Because of the short stage we still have some time to make a trip into the Young Wood (lovely recreation park) before we enjoy the wonderful atmosphere of the old Transylvanian metropolis of Hermannstadt.

8. Day: Hermannstadt (Sibiu)

Individual departure or extension of trip.
