Itinerary

1. Day: Kevelaer

Individual arrival and accommodation. Kevelaer, the biggest place of pilgrimage of North-West Europe with its city centre typical of the Lower Rhine region, lies at the heart of the Lower Rhine.

2. Day: Kevelaer – Xanten (approx. 40 - 60 km)

Our first stage leads us through brook landscapes and forests to the Rhine wetlands. Along the Rhine dyke we arrive in the Roman cathedral and Siegfried town of Xanten. If we keep our eyes open on our walk through Xanten, we will notice that past epochs are still present here. The lovingly restored city centre and relics from Roman times invite us on a stroll through our place of accommodation.

3. Day: Xanten – Elten (approx. 40 km)

Today we discover the pure Rhine landscape with the boundless Rhine wetlands and old Rhine arms. Past the Gothic Hanseatic city of Kalkar, on dyke roads and across the Rhine to Emmerich, we don’t have far to go until we reach our destination, Elten. A walk through the village with its many listed objects should at any rate be included on our agenda.

4. Day: Elten – Nimwegen – Elten (approx. 50 km)

Through the Rhine lowlands we cycle along Rhine arms and canals to Nimwegen, the oldest city of Holland. The history of the town goes back to the time of the Roman Empire. We head back on the other side of the Rhine and on dyke roads to Elten, where we stay for a second night.

5. Day: Elten – Afferden (approx. 40 km)

We cross the Rhine and continue our bicycle tour through the unique German-Dutch nature reserve „Düffel“. Afterwards we head across the Reichswald (forest), the biggest connected woodland of the Lower Rhine, with a size of approx. 5.100 ha. Later on, the path leads us along the Maas to our place of accommodation, Afferden.

6. Day: Afferden - Kevelaer (approx. 40 km)

Through peaceful Maas villages, unique moorlands and dune landscape, past manors and moated castles, we reach the asparagus village of Walbeck with its two windmills, and after that our place of departure, Kevelaer.
