Cycle fun in „Bavarian“ style

Comfortable bike routes, shady outdoor dining areas, the most famous Bavarian breweries and culinary delights – heart, what more could you want? We cycle through a scenically charming region at first along the Altmühl and Danube River and experience the biggest conjoined hop cultivation area in the world: the Hallertau. Here the cycle paths lead partly along the German Hop Road and partly on the beautiful Abens Cycle Path to the old Episcopal city of Freising.

Total length: approx. 210 – 231 bicycle kilometres

Dates

22.04.12 till 16.09.12

Itinerary

1. Day: Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz

Individual arrival and accommodation. The historic city in the heart of Bavaria will certainly enchant us with its flair and hospitality. Culture enthusiasts will look forward to a visit at the Lothar Fischer Museum; also, the biggest eco-brewery of Germany – the Lammsbräu – is based here.

2. Day: Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz - Beilngries/Dietfurt (approx. 43 - 54 km)

We start our first cycling stage along the „Tour de Baroque“ and cycle via Freystadt to Berching. The Main-Danube-Canal and the Benedictine Abbey of Plankstetten, which rests atop a woody mountainside, point us the way to Beilngries/Dietfurt.

3. Day: Beilngries/Dietfurt - Kelheim (approx. 34 - 45 km)

Today we are only a short distance away from Riedenburg with its charming townscape, the three fortresses, and the crystal museum. We go on to Kehlheim, where the Altmühl and Danube River flow together.

4. Day: Kelheim - Abensberg (approx. 20 km)

We begin the day with a boat trip through the break-through of the Danube to the truly beautifully situated Weltenburg Abbey. Then we head on to Abensberg on our bikes, the “northern portal of the Hallertau”, home to the Kuchlbauer wheat beer brewery and its landmark, the Kuchlbauer-Tower (a Hundertwasser architectural project). On a tour through the brewery we can observe the art of brewing up close!

5. Day: Abensberg - Freising (approx. 55 km)

We cycle via Mainburg to Au, where the castle brewery with its Au beer and the beautiful beer garden invites us for a visit before we continue through the Hallertau in the direction of Freising. Additionally worth seeing is the Freising Cathedral with its mysterious crypt and you can also visit the historic section of town.

6. Day: Freising (Trip to Erding, approx. 47 km or trip to Munich, approx. 68 km)

Bicycle tour through the rural Erdinger Land south of the Isar to Erding and back. Alternatively, bicycle tour along the Isar Cycle Path into the chic city of Munich and back. Who would like to can leave their bicycle in Freising and take the suburban train to Munich and back (to be organised on your own).

7. Day: Freising

Individual departure or extension of trip.
