Aare Cycle Path

Aare Cycle Path

The classic among the Swiss bicycle tours…

From Interlaken by Thuner Lake the rivers Aare and Rhine lead us to Lake Constance. The backdrop of the Jungfrau, Mönch, and Eiger Mountain, the federal capital of Bern, and the many cities and villages on the border of the French Jura will fascinate us, as will the Rhine Falls and the southern flair of Lake Constance.

Total length: approx. 295 bicycle kilometres

Dates

27.04.12 till 07.10.12

Travel beginning: daily arrival

Duration: 8 days (7 nights)

1. Day: Interlaken

Individual arrival and accommodation.

TIP: A trip to the Aare Ravine in the Haslit Valley between Meiringen and Innertkirchen is very recommendable (by car or train, to be organised on your own!)

2. Day: Interlaken - Bern (boat trip + approx. 35 km)

The day begins with a relaxing boat trip across Lake Thun before we head farther to Bern. The old town invites us to linger and is part of the World Cultural Heritage of the UNESCO.

3. Day: Bern - Biel (approx. 50 km)

Just after Bern we arrive at Lake Wohlen, which offers a contrasting interplay between nature paradise and electricity generation. Cycling in the direction of Biel. At Lake Biel, we should make a break.

4. Day: Biel - Solothurn (approx. 30 km)

Quickly we have reached Solothurn today and still have enough time to explore the city to our heart’s content. Solothurn is considered to be the prettiest baroque town in Switzerland!

5. Day: Solothurn - Aarau (approx. 60 km)

Through the lovely river landscape of the Aare we pass through many villages and finally arrive in Aarau.

6. Day: Aarau - Schaffhausen (train trip + approx. 65 km)

A short train ride takes us to Brugg. Once there we mount our bikes and cycle to Koblenz, where the Aare and Rhine meet. From now on we follow the Rhine upstream. Shortly before we reach our destination of Schaffhausen today, we can look forward to an absolute highlight of our trip: the famous Rhine Falls. On a boat trip to the rocks of the Rhine Falls we will experience the natural spectacle up close!

7. Day: Schaffhausen - Constance (approx. 55 km)

We cycle into the charming Stein am Rhein and from here along Lake Constance into the old Episcopal city of Constance. Especially worth seeing here are, for instance, the Rosgarten Museum, the Flower Island of Mainau, or the Monastic Island of Reichenau.

8. Day: Constance

Individual departure or extension of trip.
