Venice - Porec

Venice - Porec

On the way in Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia...

This tour combines 3 countries in 1 spectacular bicycle trip! We experience cities such as Venice with its numerous canals and bridges, the former Habsburg seaport town of Trieste, and the much liked holiday destination of Porec. Long drawn-out coasts with beautiful beaches and romantic Adriatic small towns await us, as are interesting trips into the heartland.

Itinerary

1. Day: Venice mainland

Individual arrival and accommodation on the mainland before Venice (very good bus connections into the lagoon city).

2. Day: Venice mainland - Caorle/surroundings (approx. 55 km)

After few short kilometres on our bicycles we will ferry from the port of Tronchetto to Lido Island, and then with the Vaporetto (public boat) from Lido Island to Punta Sabbioni. Afterwards we cycle along the Venetian coast (many bathing possibilities) in the direction of Caorle.

3. Day: Caorle/surroundings - Portogruaro (approx. 40 km)

We bid the sea farewell for the time being and cycle in northern direction towards the Julian Alps. The pretty town of Portogruaro welcomes us.

4. Day: Portogruaro - Aquileia/Palmanova (approx. 45 - 65 km)

Accompanied by rivers and canals, we cycle to Aquileia today (once a big city of the Roman Empire, in which we will find many remarkable art treasures and ruins) or to Palmanova (former fortress town, whose outline is based exactly on a nine-pronged star). If you wish you can also shorten the day trip on approx. 45 km by a train ride from Portogruaro to Latisana (organized by yourself, approx. € 5,-- per person incl. bike).

5. Day: Aquileia/Palmanova - Trieste (approx. 40 - 70 km)

We cross the Isonzo River (where the big battles during World War I took place) and soon reach the sea again. We can stop anywhere for a break along the marvellous coast. Duino Castle rises steeply above a bay and Miramare Castle, too, is also well worth a visit with its terrific park, before we cycle into the seaport town of Trieste. You can also shorten the day trip on approx. 40 km by a train ride from Monfalcone to Trieste (organized by yourself, approx. € 5,-- per person incl. bike).

6. Day: Trieste - Portoroz (approx. 45 km)

Today we leave Italy and cycle through the lovely Slovenian towns of Koper and Piran as far as Portoroz, a famous bathing and health resort.

7. Day: Portoroz - Porec (approx. 55 km)

Past the salt gardens of Secovlje, where sea salt is gained on huge areas by means of natural evaporation, we cycle across the border to Croatia. Our destination is Porec, the most significant city on the West Istrian Coast. We should by all means visit the Euphrasius-Basilica, which was admitted to the World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO.

8. Day: Porec

Individual departure or extension of trip.
