Individual arrival and accommodation. On our walk we can explore the electoral residence, the 600-year-old town hall, the historic row of houses, and the splendid churches.

The Vils River is our first companion on our way as we rush through forests and meadows through the delightful river valley. Culture enthusiasts should not miss Hammerherren Castle in Theuern. At Kallmünz the Vils flows into the Naab, and we follow it through the lovely Naab River Valley to Regensburg.

The Danube River accompanies us till Kelheim. At the health resort of Bad Abbach, beautiful beer garden and inns enchant us for a stay. The “Liberation Hall”, built in the style of the Roman Pantheon, greets us from afar and points us the way to Kelheim. Who deems today’s stage too short can add a trip through the wild romantic Danube Sink with a visit to the famous Weltenburg Monastery (an optional trip per boat is also possible).

The Altmühl and the Main-Danube-Channel become our new companions along the way. Passing the flowstone cave of Schulerloch, we reach the picturesque small town of Essing, where we marvel at an unusual bridge structure: the curved and, at the same time, longest wooden bridge of Europe! Afterwards, we continue our journey via Riedenburg, Dietfurt and Beilngries. Once we catch a glimpse of the Benedictine Monastery of Plankstetten, we don’t have far to go until we reach Berching. The 1100-year-old ancient town, which is ringed by a completely preserved city wall with 13 towers, is an authentic embodiment of the Middle Ages.

Today we can choose between 2 routes: The shorter one runs along almost exclusively flat roads along the Main-Danube-Channel to Nürnberg; the other route is longer and - though coupled with some increases in the beginning –highly recommendable and leads us via Neumarkt in Upper Palatinate, and along the Ludwig-Danube-Main-Channel, into the old free city of Nürnberg.

Back on our bikes we follow the Pegnitz River, which is our fifth ”river companion“. The small town of Lauf should absolutely be on our itinerary for today. Shortly before Hersbruck (medieval city centre, famous water gate), Henfenfeld Castle greets us from atop the hills.

The bicycle path leads us through one part of the beautiful landscape conservation area of the “Hersbrucker Switzerland”. Gradually, the mountainsides move closer together and gentle ridges herald the first steeper slopes. From Sulzbach-Rosenberg onwards we may again expect flat terrain as we cycle at a leisurely pace to Amberg. Individual departure or extension of trip.
