Romantic Spreewald

Romantic Spreewald

Pure nature...

We visit a river valley which belongs to the most beautiful and at the same time most unique nature reserves of Europe. The Spreewald (Spree Forest) is an earthy inland delta with a complicated net of waterways interweaving over 100 kilometres in a confined area. In 1991, the Spreewald was turned into a biosphere reserve of the UNESCO. Where one would usually take the car to go shopping, transport bigger objects, or simply to drive to work, the people living in the heartland of Spreewald have traditionally made use of the boat.

Total length: approx. 158 – 267 bicycle kilometres

1. Day: Cottbus

Individual arrival in the metropolis of Lausitz and accommodation.

2. Day: Cottbus - Vetschau/surroundings (approx. 38 km)

We leave Cottbus through Branitzer Park, which had been designed to be the last significant German landscape garden of the 18th century, and cycle into the city of Vetschau on the border of the Spreewald.

3. Day: Vetschau/surroundings - Lübbenau/surroundings (approx. 22 km)

Today we cycle through a green maze of canals and flows. In the Spreewald village of Lehde, a typical lagoon settlement, a lot of farm houses can be reached only over a narrow bridge or by boat. We should also pay a visit to the museum village. We are welcomed to stop at hearty Spreewald inns before we reach Lübbenau. Accommodation directly in Lübbenau or surroundings.

4. Day: Lübbenau/surroundings - Lübben/surroundings (approx. 14 - 53 km)

If we choose the direct way along the Spree dam, we reach Lübben quickly. This way we have time for a boat trip or a visit to the castle, where we can learn historical facts about the Niederlausitz and the Spreewald. Longer alternative routes are possible via the Wotschofska or through the Schlabedorfer post-mining landscape.

5. Day: Lübben/surroundings - Unterspreewald (approx. 17 - 60 km)

The route leads us along quiet paths into the north of the Spreewald, which is not any less attractive for its small number of tourists who come to visit here, where the Spree branches out into many arms and channels. Our destination for today is the Spreewald village of Krausnick or Schlepzig. Longer tours, for instance to Lake Neuendorfer See and into the Krausnicker Mountains, are possible.

6. Day: Unterspreewald - Burg/surroundings (approx. 49 km)

Through water meadows along the mainstream of the Spree River and past fishing ponds, we cycle back to Lübben today, and afterwards immerse ourselves in the quiet landscape of the biosphere reserve with its magnificent forests and meadow landscapes. We cycle via Alt Zauche to Straupitz with its interesting Schinkel Church and the old linseed-oil mill. Accommodation in Burg/surroundings.

8. Day: Cottbus

Individual departure or extension of trip.
