Rhone-Route

Rhone-Route

Nowhere in Switzerland does the sun shine quite like here…

On this varied tour we get to know three entirely different types of scenery: The alpine landscape in Goms, the vastness of the Rhone Valley, and, after Villeneuve, Lake Geneva on one side of the route and vineyards on the other.

Total length: approx. 282 bicycle kilometres

Dates

01.04.12 till 15.10.12

Travel beginning: daily arrival

Duration: 8 days (7 nights)

Itinerary

1. Day: Oberwald

Individual arrival and accommodation.

2. Day: Oberwald - Brig (approx. 42 km)

On our first stage we follow the lively course of the young Rhone River. Beautiful wooden houses and a stunning mountain scenery will amaze us today. Today’s destination is the historic town of Brig, where a visit to the impressive Stockalper Castle with its 3 towers Kaspar, Melchior and Balthasar is very recommendable.

3. Day: Brig - Sierre/Sion (approx. 44 - 63 km)

Today we cycle partly along the banks of the Rhone and partly criss-cross through the fecund fields of this region. On the way, the Brigerbad with its biggest outdoor thermal bath of Suisse offers us a welcoming break and much refreshing fun. Accommodation in Sierre or in the canton capital of Sion.

4. Day: Sierre/Sion - Martigny (approx. 30 - 49 km)

On the third day of cycling we should start our journey early in the morning, since we stand a good chance of catching the heavy headwind that usually blows across the Rhone Plain in the afternoon. Vineyards, vegetables and fruits galore characterize our tour today. Worth seeing is the subterranean lake of St. Léonard as well as Saillon-les-Bains with its thermal- and spa center.

5. Day: Martigny - Lausanne/Morges (approx. 66 - 79 km)

Today we have a really easy stage ahead of us, as the route leads completely flat. From Villeneuve, the shimmering Lake Geneva, the panorama of the Savoyer Alps, and the wine villages of the Lavaux are our steady companions along the way. The Château de Chillon and the lakeside promenade of Montreux invite us for a rest on the “Swiss Riviera”. Our destination today is Lausanne or Morges. Lausanne is interesting for its series of outstanding buildings, such as the cathedral of Notre-Dame, Saint-Maire Castle, or the Olympic Museum. If the stage is too long, a part can be shortened by train or ship (to organize by yourselves).

6. Day: Lausanne/Morges - Duillier/Nyon (approx. 28 - 44 km)

Accompanied by the charm of Lake Geneva, we cycle leisurely to our hotel in Duillier or Nyon. With a marvellous view of Lake Geneva and the Alps with the Mont Blanc we enjoy some tasty fish from Lake Geneva in one of the local restaurants.

7. Day: Duillier/Nyon - Geneva/surroundings (approx. 25 - 31 km)

A diversified route finally leads us into the international metropolitan city of Geneva. Let’s take a stroll in the numerous parks, along the quay, or marvel at the town's landmark, the fountain Jet d'eau, with its until 140 m high jet of water. Accommodation in Geneva/surroundings.

8. Day: Geneva/surroundings - Oberwald

In the morning transfer back to Oberwald and individual departure. It is also possible to finish the journey in Geneva/surroundings (no reduction if you don't take the transfer back; please note it at the booking).
